Renowned Ainu sculptor Nuburi Toko (1937–2014) and his son Shusei Toko created this artwork between 1989 and 1990 to commemorate twenty-five years of goodwill between the sister cities of Kushiro, Hokkaido, Japan, and Burnaby, Canada. The Tokos are members of the Ainu culture from the northern island of Hokkaido, Japan’s first inhabitants. The sculpture is installed on the top of an open slope on Burnaby Mountain in British Columbia, Canada, looking west over Coal Harbour.
