Ronnie Miranda
Founder, Web Developer & Gigapixel Photographer
Ronnie Miranda is a web developer and photographer whose career has evolved alongside more than three decades of change in digital technology and visual media.
A graduate of Ateneo de Manila University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics, Ronnie began his career in 1987 as a computer graphics artist, becoming one of the early practitioners of 3D computer-generated imagery and animation in the Philippines. His work later expanded into consulting for video production companies and, in 1994, he founded Storm Visualization and Imaging, specializing in computer-generated visual effects for television and film.
As the internet began to emerge as a new creative medium in the 1990s, Ronnie naturally moved into website design and development. What began as another way to combine technology and visual communication grew into a long-term career building and managing websites for businesses and organizations. His early web work received recognition from the Philippine Webby Awards, and in 2002 he established Active Computer Services in British Columbia.
Photography eventually became another extension of that same interest in technology and imagery. Through Gigapixel.com, Ronnie creates ultra-high-resolution gigapixel photographs and immersive 360° panoramas that allow viewers to explore places and scenes in extraordinary detail.
Today, his work spans both web development and gigapixel photography — two disciplines that bring together the things that have shaped his career from the beginning: creativity, technology, photography, and the challenge of finding new ways to present the world visually.
What is a Gigapixel Image?
A Gigapixel image is a digital image bitmap composed of one billion pixels (1,000 megapixels), more than 100 times the information captured by a 10 megapixel digital camera. A true gigapixel image is created using actual optical data from hundreds or thousands of individual shot photos that are stitched together, allowing extreme zoom without losing clarity. In contrast, AI upscaling software uses artificial intelligence to invent and guess missing pixels to enlarge a small photo, which can look fuzzy or artificial up close.
