BC Place construction took place from May 2010-September 2011 with a massive, $514 million CAD revitalization project. The historic construction completely transformed the venue, replacing the original air-supported fabric dome with the world’s largest cable-supported retractable roof.
The Retractable Roof: The new roof structure required the addition of 26 130-ton steel masts, buttressed into the stadium’s concrete columns to support the massive cable-net system. The retractable central portion takes about 20 minutes to open or close. Exterior & Interior Upgrades: All 50,000+ seats were replaced, the exterior was modernized with light-green glass, and high-definition electronic video boards and upgraded sound systems were installed.
